Day tours of Johannesburg have a lot to offer and you really need 4 – 5 days to see all the worthwhile attractions in Johannesburg – and if you want to shop at any of the outstanding shopping malls in Johannesburg then you need even longer. We are located close to the Nelson Foundation Foundation which houses the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and if you would like to visit then please let us know and we will arrange for you to be able to go in.
Day tours of Johannesburg for time pressed travellers usually encompass Soweto and the Apartheid Museum. The Apartheid Museum is at Gold Reef City just off the M1 South and about a 17 minute drive from Abbotsford House. The Apartheid Museum is a detailed chronicle of Apartheid and gives the visitor a very real experience of life under Apartheid and the Struggle. Ideally you should have 3 – 4 hours available for the Apartheid Museum.
From the Apartheid Museum to Soweto is a short drive. In Soweto there is a great deal to see but if time is short make sure you go to Vilikazi Street which incorporates the homes of 2 Nobel Laureates – namely Bishop Tutu and Nelson Mandela – as well as the Hector Pietersen Museum. Hector Pietersen was the first child killed in the 1977 riots.
The Apartheid Museum and Soweto make up a full day of touring.
Other popular destinations for visitors to Johannesburg are: Constitution Hill, Liliesleaf Farm, the Oriental Plaza, Nelson Mandela Square and then, going further afield, the Lion Park in Krugersdorp, Lesedi Cultural Village and the craft markets at Hartebeesport Dam make a very enjoyable day out, particularly on a weekend. We also recommend you go to the Pilanesberg Game Reserve for your game viewing and once you are there include a visit to Sun CIty.
On a Sunday we heartily recommend a visit to Maboneng a food market experience at Arts on Main in the city of Johannesburg.
If you are interested in guns and shooting then, providing we know at least a week in advance, we can arrange a unique outing to a shooting range in Johannesburg.
Johannesburg is the gateway to Southern Africa and whether you are coming on holiday or business it is really worthwhile to plan to have 3 or 4 days for sightseeing in and around Johannesburg.
